Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups water, lukewarm
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 5½–6 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 large apples, gala or honeycrisp or granny smith
- 1/3 cup butter, melted or very soft
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup karo syrup
- 1/2 15-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
- In a stand mixer, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir well and let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
- Add melted butter, eggs, salt, and 2 cups of flour, then mix on low with a dough hook for 2 minutes until well mixed.
- Incorporate an additional 3½ cups of flour, mixing on low until combined. Add more flour, if necessary, until the dough pulls away from the bowl. Knead on low for another 3 minutes.
- Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rest in a warm place for about 30 minutes, until it has doubled in size.
- Once doubled, turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a rectangle. Roll the dough into a 24" x 12" rectangle, about 1/2" thick.
Notes
You can use any tart and sweet apple variety for the filling.
Make sure to let the dough rest in a warm place to ensure it rises properly.
Try adding nuts or raisins for extra flavor in the filling.
